Coastal Corrosion Catastrophe?

The depositing of salt (sodium chloride) on surfaces is the cause coastal corrosion. Metals, such as the aluminium AC coils are made from, have a natural microscopic layer on their surface to protect from corrosion. For aluminium, this layer is called aluminium oxide. For iron, the layer is iron oxide. These layers acts to prevent corrosion from occurring. However, the chloride part of salt, changes the ability of the oxide layer to protect the metal. Chloride breaks this layer down, causing pockmarks to form, known as the pitting of the aluminium. The problem eventually gets so bad that the coils themselves disintegrate.

Your air conditioner’s condenser coil is the most vulnerable to this problem because it’s made up of many copper tubes with attached aluminium fins that spin to disperse heat quickly. When salt and moisture make their way between the copper and aluminium it causes corrosion and eventually Freon leaks.

Eventually their is a rippled effect and the corroded

coils mean your system isn’t getting proper air flow

and the heat transfer is reduced. You AC system will

begin to operate inefficiently and will probably have

frequent shutdowns.

Warning signs

  • Little circulation or poor cooling results?

  • System freezing with parts icing over?

  • Pockmarks on the equipment?

If you live in a coastal area, this might be an indication of saltwater damage. The closer you are to the ocean, the greater the damage salt can do to your air conditioner. Sometimes units that should last 10-15 years are badly deteriorated within 5 years.
